Hi Christine, I just had to write and tell you about the amazing effects the Envirofan has had so far on my smelly carpets. I know you told me to run it continuously for 8 weeks and then contact you but I’m so excited after 9 days just have to thank you. The smell inside my house has almost vanished and the sub floor area doesn’t have the sour smell it did. I believe my carpets will recover and the fan isn’t even installed properly yet. The man I had doing the installation was to come back and mortar the bricks in and silicone around the unit and he got sick and hasn’t been able to do this yet so there are still air spaces around the fan and it’s working regardless! How good is that?! Many thanks for your fabulous product and your help and advice to me prior to me purchasing. Every brick house on piers should have at least one of these.

I can fully recommend the Envirofan QUAD Fan – Terracotta Vent replacements as a means of reducing moisture in a sub-floor area with inadequate ventilation. I installed these fans after a recommendation from a pre-sale Building & Pest inspection, with the dual aim of reducing high moisture readings in the sub-floor and also minimising risk of termite infestation, as the property is on acreage in the North Brisbane area. I only installed one of these quad fans initially on one end of the sub-floor and I could very quickly see the results of their operation. After another month, I installed the 2nd set of these fans on the opposite end of the sub-floor and the results are very pleasing. This would be the driest I have seen my sub-floor area in 17 years. Even after heavy rain in the last few months in the Brisbane area, the drying efficiency of these fans is excellent. The added benefit has been the removal of the damp musty smell in the subfloor area and this is also noticeable in the house itself, especially after it has been locked up for an extended period. I would also expect that risk of termite infestation has been reduced by removal of the damp conditions in the sub-floor area. The installation of the fans are very simple and the added bonus of the instructions being supplied by Envirofan, made the installation that much easier. All connectors required were provided and wiring from the Power adaptor was also marked to ensure correct DC voltage connections. These are definitely DIY installation. I used the calculations provided on the Envirofan website to determine the required number of fan units for the sub-floor area and this calculation appears to provide an accurate result (based on 4 air changes/hour) in that even though 1 quad fan set worked OK, the installation of the recommended 2nd set has resulted in excellent drying of the sub-floor area. An excellent product and the company representative (Christine) is very easy to deal with and the purchase completed by email and the EFT (electronic funds transfer) payment was an easy and pleasing experience. I have been putting it off to crawl under the house for some time. The moisture problem was so bad; I really did not want to find out for a while, especially with steel frame construction. I cut holes into the brick wall and installed 100mm PVC pipe air intakes to get the cross ventilation going. In the end the PVC pipes will be encased in concrete on the veranda side with a mesh grill to stop critters getting under the house. On the other side of the house I have installed the 6 Envirofan quad-fan systems. I checked under the house this morning after 2 months and the problem is completely solved! No moisture, no condensation. For now, all is well. Many thanks.

We bought a double brick house that had some moisture under the floor, with a nasty musty smell developing in the bedroom. We did have pre purchase building inspection, that advice proved to be very disappointing with respect to the subfloor moisture problems.

The sub-floor space was restricted, so we arranged for a builder to crawl under the house, taking a number of photos, numbered according to a floor plan of the house. Lots of water very damp soil, with moisture seen on the terra cotta pipes under the 3 bathrooms – looked like the pipes were broken or blocked and leaking. Very disappointed that this was not included in the pre purchase building report.

Obviously we had to find and fix the source of the water, then improve sub-floor ventilation.

Drain experts diagnosed broken sewer and stormwater pipes, with quotes of up to $50,000 to repair and reline pipes. Glad I did not trust their advice.

Lucas, of Wild Water Plumbing inspected the sewer pipes, and reported they were OK, but that the heat exchanger HWS has 2 drain pipes that were not connected to lines, so were discharging water beside the house. Thank you Lucas for your honest advice.

I hooked up 2 drain lines to the HWS and ran the ends into buckets in the back yard, and was staggered to see the total amount of water produced, seemingly much more water than the large house A/C produced. For some years water had been dripping from the HWS so the ground had become saturated – the cause of all the damp soil seen under the house in the photos.

So source of water identified and rectified – now to the sub-floor ventilation.

Subfloor ventilation firms quoted around $7,000 to remove the damp. But neither mentioned the complex but ineffective ducted fan system installed by the previous owner. So I lost faith in those 2 firms.

I Googled sub-floor ventilation and found Envirofan, and was impressed with their informative articles and videos.

I contacted Christine with a multitude of questions, all of which were answered comprehensively.

We chose the aluminium heritage vent, which looks even better installed.

Our final installation was for 10 fans – as a double brick house air flow under the house is very restricted, so we had to knock small passageways into each room’s subfloor perimeter to allow air to flow into that room and out via the fans. We used 3 large transformers and extra heavy duty garden 12 V garden light wire for the long runs under the house to the fans. Our final budget of time materials and fans was much less than the $7,000 quoted, with a far superior look and performance.

We used Holman Garden Lighting connection 3 way Tees so the actual connections to the fans and circuits were minimised – heat shrink wrap ensured water tight connections. Most connections were waterproof screwcap type on the Holman garden lighting system. The garden lighting wire and connectors are designed to be buried in the garden, so ideal for sub floor fans.

The final result performs magnificently, and the sub-floor is now dry. The system is on a time clock, so a few hours a day running time is more than adequate to keep the sub-floor very dry. The musty smell is now gone.

I don’t think I am an easy mark, but the first four firms – plumbing and ventilation – were really conning me with their advice and their quotes.

So finding Lukas of Wild Water Plumbing, and Christine at Envirofan, who are both fair dinkum and trustworthy folk, it was a great relief.

I have had to dismantle one of the Envirofans to adjust it to mate up with the existing system, and was impressed with the quality of the components, and elegance of design.

The cast aluminium vents are of exceptional quality, we had to trim one edge to fit under brick corbelling.

I believe that Christine and Envirofan are an excellent choice of these seeking a quality product, with quality support and advice, so a DIYer can achieve better than professional results, with a truly elegant enhancement to their house.

I enjoyed this project, and working with Christine as a team.

Some ventilation and pest management companies attempt to beguile the Australian home-owner with unverified fan-forced vents; unlike the EF range exclusive to Envirofan. Furthermore, these same companies will tell you that they are exclusively licensed to install sub-floor ventilation systems. As of October 2016, your state-wide Fair Trading and Services office will support that no such license exists. You can rest assured your EF fan-forced vent purchase can be safely installed by your preferred local tradesperson, be they a builder, electrician, plumber, pest controller, or other. Avoid companies that will jump at the chance to use your home to test their products. If in doubt, contact Envirofan today!
